How to Load Tubing into Masterflex I/P High-Perfomance Peristaltic Pumps

Tubing Loading Steps

This video shows how to load tubing into a high-performance Masterflex I/P peristaltic pump using PharMed BPT 6508-88 tubing.

Preloading

  • Cut the desired length of tubing
  • Insert tubing connectors
  • Secure with clamps

Loading into the Pump

  1. Open the pump by turning the knob counterclockwise
  2. Release the retainer and open the door
  3. Lift latch to release and open the inclusion bed
  4. Align roller with the inclusion center before loading the tubing
  5. Wrap tubing around the rotor using its natural curve
  6. Latch using the first of the two notches on top
  7. Close the door and tighten the retaining knob to hold tubing in place
  8. Run pump 2 - 3 rotations at a lower speed*
  9. Turn drive off*
  10. Loosen the retainer but do not open the door
  11. Release latch from first notch*
  12. Insert into the second and snap closed*
  13. Tighten the tubing retainer knob until a slight indentation in the tubing is visible
  14. Optional step: Mark the inlet and outlet side to view if tubing is creeping through the pump
  15. Turn retainer knob once if tubing creeps

*Note These steps are for higher durometer tubing, because it is harder to start

I will be loading an Masterflex I/P High-performance peristaltic pump PharMed BPT 6508-88 tubing First, start with cutting a desired length of tubing that will be used in your pump. Next, insert tubing connectors and secure them with clamps to hold them in place. The I/P Peristaltic Pump has two notches on the top. Tubing with a higher durometer can be hard to start. So when you're using high durometer tubing, you will want to insert the latch into the first notch to break in the tubing for two or three rotations of the rotor. Then release and insert the latch into the second notch.

Loading the tubing

First open the pump by turning the tubing retainer knob counterclockwise, release the retainer and open the door. Now lift the latch to release and open the inclusion bed. I find that it helps to align one roller with the center of the inclusion before you start to load the tubing.Notice the natural curve of the tubing. Allow the natural curve of the tubing to wrap around the rotor when loading into the pump. Now using the first of the two notches on the top, remember that high durometer tubing is harder to start. Close the door and tighten the retaining knob enough to hold the tubing in place.

Making sure the pump drive is at a lower speed, let the pump run two or three rotations of the rotor and then turn the drive off. Now loosen the retainer, but don't open the door. Release the latch from the first notch and insert it into the second and snap it closed. You may have seen a small amount of tubing move to the outside of the pump. That's fine, that's what it's supposed to do. Now tighten the tubing retainer knob until you can see a slight indentation into the tubing. This will help the tubing from creeping through the pump. I sometimes take a pen to mark on the inlet and outlet side so that when I turn the drive on and it begins to run to make sure that the tubing is not creeping through the pump. If it does, turn the retainer knob one more good turn. That concludes it. You're ready to run!
